Anita Rachvelshvili & Matthew Polenzani Highlight Greek National Opera’s 2019-20 Season

The Greek National Opera has announced its 2019-20 season featuring a number of rare works and great artists.

Christina Poulitsi and Vassiliki Karayanni share the title role of Bellini’s “La Sonnambula” with Vassilis Kavayas in the role of Elvino. Philippe Auguin conducts Marco Arturo Marelli’s production from the Wiener Staatsoper and Royal Opera.

Performance Dates: Oct. 11-29, 2019

Lena Platonos’ children opera “The Emperor’s Nightingale” will be directed by Katerina Petsatodi. The opera will be presented in collaboration with the Animasyros International Animation Festival.

Performance Dates: Oct. 20, 2019-Jan. 26, 2020

Bryan Hymel sings the title role of Verdi’s “Don Carlo.” He is joined by legendary soprano Barbara Frittoli and Cellia Costea, who share the role of Elisabeth, Tassis Christoyannis and Dimitri Platanias alternating as Rodrigo, and Alexander Vinogradov as Filippo. Philippe Auguin conducts Graham Vick’s production.

Performance Dates: Dec. 8, 2019-Jan. 5, 2020

Tassis Christoyannis and Nadine Lehner star in the lead roles of Berg’s “Wozzeck” as part of the 20th-century Cycle.  Olivier Py directs the production with Vassilis Christopoulos conducting.

Performance Dates: Jan. 19-Feb. 2, 2020

Giorgos Ziavras conducts Alexandros Efklidis’s production of J. Strauss II’s “Die Fledermaus.” The operetta will feature soloists from the Greek National Opera.

Performance Dates: Feb. 7-March 5, 2020

Nikos Hadjiapostolou’s “The Apaches of Athens” will be shown in a filmed version directed & produced by the Brothers Gaziadis in collaboration with the Greek Film Archive Foundation.

Performance Date: Feb. 15, 2020

Yiorgos Vassilandonakis’ “Pope Joan” is set to star Chryssa Maliamani and Dionysios Sourbis with Stathis Soulis directing and Dimitris Karantzas conducting.

Performance Dates: March 8-22, 2020

“The Artist on the Composer” by Yorgos Lanthimos will be shown with the collaboration of the NEON organization. The precise dates of the program presentation will be announced shortly, as well as the details related to the making of the film and the musicians accompanying it.

Angelos Triantafyllou’s “Inland” is set to star the GNO Orchestra, Chorus, and interpreters of 65+. The work will include the participation of the Alternative Stage Intercultural Orchestra and the 65+ Chorus of the GNO Learning & Participation. Elias Voudouris conducts Nikos Karathanos’s production.

Massimo Giordano and Anita Rachvelishvili star in Massenet’s “Werther” in a production by Benoît Jacquot and conducted by Lukas Karytinos.

Performance Dates: May 10-24, 2020

Dimitri Platanias takes on the title role of Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” He is joined by Matthew Polenzani and Christina Poulitsi in the roles of the Duke and Gilda. Philippe Auguin conducts a production by Katerina Evangelatos

Performance Dates: June 4-11, 2020

Marina Abramović’s “The Seven Deaths of Maria Callas” will be brought to the Greek National Opera after its world premiere at the Bayerische Staatsoper. The work will feature music by Marko Nikodijević and scenes from the operas of Bizet, Donizetti, Puccini, and Verdi. Yoel Gamzou conducts the production by Marina Abramović and Lynsey Peisinger. Marina Abramović and Willem Dafoe perform in the work.

Concerts 

Lukas Karytinos conducts a tribute to Kostas Paskalis with celebrated soloists.
