Angela Meade, Ainhoa Arteta & Javier Camarena To Be Featured In of ABAO-OLBE 2018-19 Season

The Bilbao Opera has announced its 2018-19 Season featuring five main stage productions and four family-oriented productions. In total, the company will present 9 titles with a total of 46 performances.

Main Stage

The 67th Season of ABAO-OLBE opens on Oct. 20 with Puccini’s “La Bohème.” Soprano Ainhoa Arteta takes on the role of Mimì with Romanian tenor Teodor Ilincai making his Bilbao debut as Rodolfo. Baritone Artur Ruciński and Jessica Nuccio round out the cast. The new production will be directed by Mario Pontiggia, which originally premiered at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo. Pedro Halffter, a great specialist in Puccini, conducts.

The opera will also be part of the Opera Berri Festival which is a socio-cultural initiative of ABAO-OLBE that aims at bringing opera closer to society, with renowned titles and tickets at 50% of their usual price. The Oct. 27 performance will feature Vanessa Goikoetxea, Martin Nusspaumer, José Manuel Díaz and Ruth Iniesta.

Performance Dates: Oct. 20-29, 2019

Next up will be Beethoven’s “Fidelio” featuring Elena Pankratova and Peter Wedd in the leading roles. Juanjo Mena conducts Beethoven’s only operatic work in a production by José Carlos Plaza. With this season’s presentation of the work, the opera will hit its 1,000th performance by ABAO-OLBE.

Performance Dates: Nov. 24-Dec.3, 208

Riccardo Frizza conducts “I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata” with Josep Bros, Roberto Tagliavini, and Ekaterina Metlova in her house debut. The stage production will be from the Teatro Regio di Parma, which was directed by Lamberto Puggelli. Grazia Pulvirenti, his widow, and collaborator will direct the production this time. The opera is part of the Tutto Verdi festival.

Performance Dates: Jan. 19-28, 2019

Angela Meade, Daniela Barcellona, Simón Orfila, and José Luis Sola lead the quartet of singers in Rossini’s Bel Canto masterpiece “Semiramide.” The new production from the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli is by Luca Ronconi. Alessandro Vitiello conducts the work.

Performance Dates: Feb. 16-25 2019

Pier Luigi Pizzi directs the final main stage production of the season bringing Bizet’s “Les Pecheurs de Perles” the stage. Javier Camarena, Maria José Moreno, and Mariusz Kwiecien sing the leading roles with Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducting.

Performance Dates: May 18-27, 2019

Concerts

Jessica Pratt headlines a new edition of “El Concierto de ABAO,” which is set to include music from “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “La Sonnambula,” “I Puritani,” “La Straniera,” and “Hamlet.” Giacomo Sagripanti conducts the event.

Performance Date: March 20, 2019

14th ABAO TXIKI SEASON

The season is devised to awaken the cultural interest of the youngest and be enjoyed with the family will feature four operas.

The program will feature the premiere of “El bosque de Grimm,” a visual show with no text, told through the music by Maurice Ravel, Caperucita Blanca by Carlo Imaz, “El traje nuevo del emperador by Iñigo Casalí, and “El científico de la ópera” with music from Verdi, Rossini, and Offenbach.
