Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann & Saioa Hernandez Lead Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège’s 2020-21 Season

The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège has announced its 2020-21 season.

The Belgium theater announced new productions, concerts, and a number of revivals. Here is a look at the upcoming season.

Productions 

Angela Gheorghiu sings the title role in Puccini’sLa Bohème alternating with Jessica Nuccio. They are joined by Stefan Pop, Marc Laho, Ionut Pascu, Maria Rey-Joly, Kamil Ben Hsaïn Lachiri, and Patrick Delcour. Frédéric Chaslin and Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera alternate in the podium.

Performance Dates: Sept. 20-Oct. 2, 2020

Patrick Davin conducts a new production of Thomas’ “Hamlet” with Cyril Teste directing. Lionel Lhote sings the title role with Jodie Devos, Béatrice Uria-Monzon, and Nicolas Courjal.

Performance Dates: Oct. 29-Nov. 10, 2020

Patrizia Ciofi, René Barbera, and Leo Nucci star in Verdi’s La Traviata with Speranza Scappucci.

Performance Dates: Nov. 16-20, 2020

Julie Robard-Gendre sings the title role in Offenbach’s “La Belle Hélène” with Reinoud Van Mechelen,  Michel Fau, Patrick Bolleire, Jean-Claude Sarragosse, and Papuna Tchuradze. Bruno Membrey conducts Michel Fau’s production.

Performance Dates: Dec. 23-31, 2020

Guido Loconsolo and Nino Machaidze star in Rossini’s “Il Turco in Italia” alongside Bruno De Simone and Diego Godoy. Giuseppe Finzi conducts the production by Fabrice Murgia.

Performance Dates: Jan. 29-Feb. 6, 2021

Celso Albelo, Jessica Pratt, Erwin Schrott, and Julie Robard-Gendre star in Offenbach’sLes Contes d’Hoffmann with Speranza Scappucci conducting.

Performance Dates: March 4-21, 2021

Verdi’s “I Lombardi alla prima Crociata” gets a new production by Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera. The production is set to star Ramón Vargas, Saioa Hernandez, Goderdzi Janelidze, Marco Ciaponi, and Luca Dall’Amico. Daniel Oren conducts.

Performance Dates: April 13-24, 2021

Cyrille Dubois, Leon Košavić, Maria Rey-Joly, Josè Maria Lo Monaco, and Sophie Karthäuser, and Lionel Lhote star in Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte. Christophe Rousset conducts.

Performance Dates: May 14-22, 2021

Jodie Devos sings the title role in Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment. Lawrence Brownlee, Pietro Spagnoli, and Julie Pasturaud round out the cast, which is conducted by Jordi Bernàcer.

Performance Dates: June 15-29, 2021

Pierre Doyen, Gianna Cañete Gallo, and Maxime Melnik perform Orff’s “Carmina Burana” with Alberto Veronesi conducting.

Performance Date: June 25, 2021

 

 

Concerts 

Cyril Englebert conducts the Summer Concert.

Performance Date: Sept. 6, 2020

Jonas Kaufmann takes the famed Liege stage for the first time alongside Speranza Scappucci.

Performance Date: Nov. 6, 2020

Johann Strauss, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit of the Waltz will be presented with soprano Louise Foor.

Performance Date: Nov. 22, 2020

Bruno Membrey leads Music Chapel Soloists for the Music Chapel Concert.

Performance Date: Dec. 5, 2020

Juan Diego Flórez and Christopher Franklin perform an opera gala.

Performance Date: Jan. 8, 2021

Jessica Pratt and Lawrence Brownlee star in a Bel Canto concert alongside Speranza Scappucci.

Performance Date: Jan. 29, 2021

Nadine Sierra joins Lorenzo Passerini for an evening of great arias.

Performance Date: May 1, 2021

Throughout the season there will be Fridays at the Opera.  

Performance Dates: Oct. 9, 2020-May 21, 2021

The season will also include “The Enchanted Story of Lakme,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” and “Ursule and Hirsute.”
