Angel Blue, Sasha Cooke, Isabel Leonard & Nahuel di Pierro Highlight Houston Grand Opera’s 2022-23 Season

The Houston Grand Opera has announced its 2022–23 season featuring operatic productions. Here is a look.

Verdi’s “La Traviata” opens the season with Angel Blue and Cecilia Violetta López sharing the title role. They are joined by Bryan Hymel, Ricardo Garcia, Andrei Kymach, and Anthony Clark Evans. Matthew Aucoin conducts the production by Arin Arbus.

Performance Dates: Oct. 21-Nov. 8, 2022

Dame Ethel Smyth’s “The Wreckers,” with a libretto by Henry Brewster, will star Sasha Cooke, Norman Reinhardt, Mané Galoyan, Reginald Smith, Jr. Daniel Belcher, Paul Groves, and Luke Sutliff. Patrick Summers conducts with Louisa Muller directing.

Performance Dates: Oct. 28-Nov. 11, 2022

Javier Martínez and Leonard Foglia’s “El Milagro del Recuerdo” will be shown with Federico De Michelis, Cecilia Duarte, Miguel De Aranda, Vanessa Alonzo, Rafael Moras, Héctor Vásquez, Claudia Chapa, Vanessa Becerra, Vincent Pequeño, William Carlton Galvez, and Israel Alcala. Benjamin Manis conducts Leonard Foglia’s production.

Performance Dates: Dec. 8-18, 2022

Nahuel di Pierro, Elena Villalón, Nicole Heaston, Adam Plachetka, and Lauren Snouffer star in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” with Patrick DSummers conducting Michael Grandage’s production.

Performance Dates: Jan. 13-28, 2023

Matthew Polenzani and Isabel Leonard lead Massenet’s “Werther” with Sean Michael Plumb and Jasmine Habersham. Robert Spano conducts Benoît Jacquot’s production.

Performance Dates: Jan. 27-Feb. 10, 2023

Tamara Wilson, Jonathan Tetelman, Rod Gilfry, and Samuel Ramey lead Puccini’s “Tosca.” Benjamin Manis conducts John Caird’s production.

Performance Dates: April 21-May 5, 2023

The season ends with Strauss’s “Salome” with Amanda Majeski singing the title role. The cast includes Ryan McKinny as Jokanaan, Chad Shelton as Herod, and Denyce Graves as Herodias. Director Francisco Negrin makes his HGO debut with the U.S. premiere of this production and Eun Sun Kim conducts.
