Andris Nelsons Extends Contract with Gewandhausorchester
By Francisco SalazarThe Gewandhausorchester has announced that Andris Nelsons will remain Gewandhauskapellmeister until 2032.
The orchestra said that during his third term at the position, he will further international cooperation with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and exciting filming projects with Deutsche Grammophon – DG. Joint projects, such as the most recent one-of-a-kind Shostakovich Festival 2025 in Leipzig, will also be the focus.
In a statement, Nelsons said, “I am delighted to be able to continue the successful collaboration with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Gewandhaus team led by Gewandhaus Director Andreas Schulz beyond 2027. It is something very special to work with a director who knows how to accompany and support the music and the musicians so intensively. It is an honor for me to work and perform with the musicians of this unique ensemble. I look back with great joy on the two successful Mahler and Shostakovich festivals, on the numerous recordings we have made together with Deutsche Grammophon, on the opportunities to spread our reputation as a top orchestra around the world, and on the concerts in the Gewandhaus, where we feel the bond with our local audience so intensely and on which we would like to continue to build.”
He added, “I am deeply grateful for these experiences! In this context, I would like to mention how important the support of the unique Gewandhaus Radio Project is for us, which is run by the Zukunft Gewandhaus zu Leipzig Foundation, established in December 2023. I am also very grateful to the Society of Friends of the Gewandhaus and our sponsors, who have promoted and supported numerous projects that were particularly close to my heart. Last but not least, I would like to thank Mayor Burkhard Jung, our Mayor for Culture, Dr. Skadi Jennicke, Mayor for Finance Torsten Bonew, and all the City Councilors of the City of Leipzig for their broad support! It is an honor for me to represent the incomparable musical spirit of the cultural city of Leipzig through our world-class orchestra. Since the first day of our collaboration, I have felt a special human and musical connection with the musicians of the orchestra, which has unfolded into unforgettable shared moments. I look forward to many more experiences of this kind and to the implementation of new ideas and projects.”
