San Francisco Opera has announced that soprano Andriana Chuchman is the winner of the 2019 Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Emerging Stars Competition.

The soprano, who first performed with the company in Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” in 2018, will be awarded $10,000 as the fourth winner in the competition’s history. She was named “2019 Emerging Star of the Year” for a popular vote conducted on the company’s website throughout the month of July.

Other singers in the running included Christina Gansch, Sasha Cooke, Hye Jung Lee, Daniel Johansson, Rachel Willis-Sørensen, Golda Schultz, and J’Nai Bridges.

“I want to give a huge thank you to my wonderful family, friends and fans who voted for me! I’m feeling the love,” said Chuchman in a press release. “Your immense support of me and my talent means the world to me. And a big congrats to the entire group of stellar singers who were nominated. A special thank you to Maria Manetti Shrem and Jan Shrem for generously supporting this competition and award, and to San Francisco Opera for nominating me.”

Chuchman is set to appear at the Hamburg State Opera, the 2020 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, the Houston Grand Opera, Opera San Antonio, and Opera Omaha during the 2019-20 season.
