By David Salazar

Staatstheater Cottbus will present Verdi’s “Nabucco” starting on April 25, 2026 at the Großes Haus.

Andreas Jäpel takes the title role, with Tatiana Trenogina as Abigaille, Yasushi Hirano as Zaccaria, Luzia Tietze as Fenena, and Alexey Sayapin and Jens Klaus Wilde alternating as Ismaele.

Conductor GMD Alexander Merzyn leads the Philharmonisches Orchester in the production, directed by Armin Petras, who transposes the opera’s biblical drama of exile from ancient Babylon to the Siberian city of Norilsk, which was founded as a Gulag labor camp and long isolated from the rest of Russia. Set design is by Natascha von Steiger, with costumes by Patricia Talacko and choreography and live camera by Nico Delpy.

There will be additional performances on April 30, May 15, and June 6.
