Ana María Martínez attended the Oscars on March 15 alongside the team of “Viva Verdi.”
The soprano graced the red carpet alongside composer Nicholas Pike, who was nominated for Best Original Song for “Sweet Dreams of Joy” from the documentary “Viva Verdi.”
Martínez was representing the opera community alongside Sonya Yoncheva, who was invited as a Rolex ambassador with her husband Domingo Hindoyan. Opera was also represented in the opening monologue when Josh Groban sang an arrangement of Handel’s “Zadok the Priest.”
The representation of opera at the Oscars comes as the art form has been in the spotlight thanks to actor Timothée Chalamet’s comments where he said “no one cares” about the opera or ballet. Conan O’Brien referred to the controversy during his opening monologue stating, “Security is extremely tight tonight. I’m told there’s concern about attacks from both the opera and ballet community. They’re just mad you left out jazz.”
