Amid Controversy, 2019 Timothée Chalamet Video Resurfaces, Actor Calls Opera ‘Outdated’
By Francisco SalazarAfter a clip of Timothée Chalamet saying “no one cares” about opera went viral, a new clip from the Graham Norton show has resurfaced in which Chalamet called opera an “outdated art form.”
The clip, from 2019, saw the actor state, “I love movies. I love acting. I love going to movies. I was kinda getting scared when I was younger that maybe it was becoming like opera or something, like an outdated art form.”
The clip comes after the opera and ballet industry responded with viral videos and comments criticizing and inviting the actor to the opera. Even Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis shared a video from someone criticizing the actor and Frank Leonard, founder of the Blacklist, shared the Seattle Opera’s viral promotional campaign stating, “This is an objectively hilarious response to a young actor saying you’re not relevant any more, and Chalamet should absolutely show up to one of their performances.”
Defenders of the actor did post an interview from December 2025 in which he praised his mother and grandmother, who danced at the New York City Ballet. In that interview while he was promoting “Marty Supreme,” he said, “My grandmother danced in the New York City Ballet, my mother danced in the New York City Ballet, my sister danced in the New York City Ballet. I grew up dreaming big at the backstage at the Koch Theater in New York. […] I’m like a Venn Diagram of the best cultural influences of the 21st century and 20th century.”
Chalamet is currently campaigning for an Oscar for Best Actor for his acclaimed role in “Marty Supreme.” He is also currently one of the most successful actors in Hollywood with such recent films as “Marty Supreme,” “Dune Part One and Two,” “Wonka,” and “Little Women” turning into box office hits.
