By David Salazar

The American Symphony Orchestra will present Händel’s “Judas Maccabaeus” on Dec. 14, 2023 at the Riverside Church.

The showcase will feature tenor Jack Swanson, mezzo -soprano Deborah Nansteel, bass William Guanbo Su, and soprano Brandie Sutton. They will be joined by Leon Botstein at the podium.

The concert also features the Bard Festival Chorale and The Riverside Choir.

The Oratorio dramatizes the “Jews’ resistance to their oppressors during the Maccabean Revolt led by Judas against the Greek empire,” said a description of the piece in an official press release issued by the American Symphony Orchestra. “The composer’s depiction of a peoples’ triumph over tyranny is brought to life through exultant choruses. The symbolic duo of an Israeli man and woman plays an important part in the work and provides a voice of their people, and to the chorus of Israelites.”

Next up for the American Symphony Orchestra is a performance of Dvořák’s 1890 Requiem. That concert is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2024.
