American Opera Project Receives Major Gift from Howard Gilman Foundation

By David Salazar

The American Opera Project has received a $35,000 award from the Howard Gilman Foundation.

The funding is intended to help the company with its general operations throughout the 2020-21 season.

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, the American Opera Project has delivered online content in the form of the original series “Lean on Me”  as well as streams of world premiere productions of such operas as “The Echo Drift,” “As One,” “Harriet Tubman,” and “Three Way.”

The foundation honors the legacy of Howard Gilman, who believed in the power of the arts to transform lives. Gilman funded the first Next Wave Festival at BAM and transformed part of his Florida estate into studio space for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris. He also provided major support for major museums like MOMA and the Met.
