American Opera Project Receives Grant for ‘The Night Falls’

By David Salazar

The American Opera Project has announced that it will receive the New Music USA Project Grant for “The Night Falls.”

The work, which is billed as a dance-driven combination of opera, dance, and musical theater, will be choreographed and directed by Troy Schumacher and features music by Ellis Ludwig-Leone. Karen Russell will provide the book and lyrics for the work.

The “dance-opera” tells the story of Felisberto, a teenager haunted by recurring nightmares of his dead boyfriend. He starts to suspect that Sirens are beckoning him to go to “The Night Falls,” a tourist trap in Florida. He eventually makes his way there and discovers that others have also heard the call and have more than the nightmare in common.

“The Night Falls” is the latest work to be developed as part of The American Opera Project’s Dance Opera Initiative.
