American Lyric Theater Announces Three Commissions

By David Salazar

American Lyric Theater has announced three new opera commissions.

Audiences will get a chance to hear libretto readings for the works starting on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City. Lawrence Edelson, the Artistic and General Director of American Lyric Theater, will also lead a discussion.

The new works include “She Who Dared” by Jasmine Barnes and Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton. The work focuses on the impact of Browder V. Gayle, one of the pioneers of the Civil Rights movement.

“Working for the Macbeths” is another one of the commissioned works. Created by Johanny Navarro and Marcus Yi, this work takes the iconic Shakespeare play and gives it a comic twist with Florinda, a lady-in-waiting for the iconic anti-heroes, being told by witches that she will be the downfall of her employers. Instead, she aims to give the Macbeths a happy ending.

The last of the trio of commissioned works is Alex Weiser and Stephanie Fleischmann’s “Tevye’s Daughters.” This opera is inspired by a work by Sholem Aleichem and focuses on Shprintze who falls in love with a man above her station.

All three librettos will be workshopped throughout the fall. The Nov. 12 event runs from 2 p.m. through 9 p.m. with a dinner break scheduled from 5:30-7:30.
