
Alexander Neef Named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor
By Afton MarkayDirector of the Opéra National de Paris, Alexander Neef has been awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, the highest French honorary decoration.
Throughout his career, Neef has held positions with the Salzburg Festival, Santa Fe Opera, Canadian Opera Company, and now serves as Director of the Opéra National de Paris. While at the Canadian Opera Company, he developed co-productions with, among others, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, London’s Royal Opera House, Madrid’s Teatro Real, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Under Neef’s lead, Opéra National de Paris has reported notable success marked by packed houses since the end of the pandemic, and by the realization of profits in 2023, a first since 2017. He has also led initiatives such as the Paris Opera Youth Orchestra, as well as a major outreach project in French Guyana. In Feb. 2024, the President of the Republic reappointed Neef as Director until 2032.
