Alex Weiser’s ‘State of the Jews’ To Get First Complete Performances in NYC

By David Salazar

New York audiences will get a chance to hear composer Alex Weiser and librettist Ben Kaplan’s “State of the Jews” this December.

The opera, which tells the story of Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist Theodor Herzl, his conflicted relationship with his wife, and the toll that his political views and activities had on his personal life, will be presented at the Theater at the 14 Street Y between Dec. 5-8, 2019.

The performance will feature Mario Diaz-Moresco as Theodor Herzl with mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein as his wife Julie. Tenor Alex Mansoori, Bass-baritone Adrian Rosas and the C4 choir will also perform. Pianist Lee Dione will lead a seven-piece instrumental ensemble with Mary Birnbaum directing.

This series of performances are the very first complete showcases of the opera, which was developed through the LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture fellowship in 2018. “State of the Jews” has also been workshopped with additional support from American Opera Projects’ Composers & Voices Fellowship, the EtM Con Edison Composer Residences, and Roulette Intermedium.

“State of the Jews” will last 90 minutes with one intermission.
