Aleksandra Kurzak, Piotr Beczala & Ewa Vesin Highlight Polish National Opera’s 2020-21 Season

The Polish National Opera has announced its 2020-21 season featuring four new productions and a number of international stars.

For the purposes of this article, we are only focusing on opera and vocal performances.

Premieres

Ho-Yoon Chung stars in the title role of Massenet’s “Werther.” The new production will be directed by Willy Decker and conducted by Patrick Fournillier and will also star Irina Zhytynska as Charlotte, Stanislav Kuflyuk as Albert, and Sylwia Olszyńska as Sophie.

Performance Dates: Oct. 8-18, 2020

Tim Murray conducts Hindemith’s “Cardillac” is set to be directed by Mariusz Treliński. The new production will be conducted by Tim Murray and will star Tomasz Konieczny, Izabela Matuła, Wojtek Gierlach, Pavlo Tolstoy, Katarzyna Szymkowiak,  and Artur Janda.

Performance Dates: Jan. 15-24, 2021

Daniel Sutin, Krzysztof Szumański, Torsten Kerl, Ann Petersen, Krzysztof Borysiewicz, and Aleksandra Orłowska star in a new production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” with Patrick Fournillier conducting and John Fulljames directing.

Performance Dates: March 26-April 1, 2021

Patrick Fournillier conducts Barbara Wysocka’s new production of Puccini’s “La Bohème.” The opera stars Maria Domżał, Adriana Ferfecka, Jarosław Kwaśniewski, Mario Rojas, Anna Jeruć-Kopeć, Aleksandra Orłowska, Szymon Mechliński, Tomasz Rak, Paweł Konik, Sławomir Kowalewski, and Łukasz Konieczny.

Performance Dates: June 17-27, 2021

Revivals 

Moniuszko’s “Halka” returns to the stage with Krzysztof Szumański, Maria Stasiak, Dariusz Machej, Tomasz Rak, Rafał Bartmiński, and Ewa Vesin. Łukasz Borowicz conducts Rafał Kłoczko’s acclaimed production.

Ewa Vesin, Luciano Ganci, and Tomasz Konieczny star in Puccini’s “Tosca” with Patrick Fournillier in the pit.

Performance Dates: Nov. 5-29, 2020

Sonia Warzyńska-Dettlaff, Emil Ławecki, Joanna Moskowicz, Łukasz Konieczny, Kamil Zdebel, and Aleksandra Orłowska star in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” Piotr Staniszewski conducts Suzanne Andrade’s production.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14, 2020-Jan. 21, 2021

Marcello Mottadelli conducts Puccini’s “Madama Buttefly” with Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role, Bernadetta Grabias as Suzuki, Rafał Bartmiński as Pinkerton, and Tomasz Rak as Sharpless.

Performance Dates: Dec. 5-13, 2020

Moniuszko’s “Halka (Vilnius Version)” stars Ilona Krzywicka, Kamil Zdebel, Paweł Czekała, Dariusz Machej, and Łukasz Klimczak with Łukasz Borowicz conducting.

Performance Dates: Jan. 19-June 6, 2021

Andriy Yurkevych conducts Moniuszko’s “The Haunted Manor” with Adam Kruszewski, Anna Jeruć-Kopeć, Elżbieta Wróblewska, Mateusz Zajdel, Dominik Sutowicz, and Artur Janda.

Performance Dates: Feb. 5-7, 2021

Monika Ledzion-Porczyńska stars in the role of Bizet’s “Carmen” with Ewa Tracz as Micaëla, Dario Di Vietri as Don José, and Krzysztof Szumański as Escamillo. Patrick Fournillier conducts.

Joanna Moskowicz, Kacper Szelążek, and Stanislav Kuflyuk star in Orff’s “Carmina Burana” with Lorenzo Passerini leading the performance.

Performance Dates: Feb. 17-June 24, 2021

Ewa Płonka sings the title role of Verdi’s “Aida” with Dario Di Vietri, Grzegorz Szostak, Jorge Lagunes, and Łukasz Konieczny. Tadeusz Kozłowski conducting.

Performance Dates: March 5-April 25, 2021

Verdi’s “Rigoletto” is set to star Ho-Yoon Chung, Jorge Lagunes, Joanna Moskowicz, Wojtek Gierlach, and Anna Bernacka with Gerd Schaller conducting.

Oxana Shilova stars in the title role of Verdi’s “La Traviata” with Aliaksandr Mikhniuk and Marco Caria. Patrick Fournillier conducts.
