Aldeburgh Festival Unveils 2023 Edition

England’s Aldeburgh Festival has announced its 2023 edition.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be solely on vocal and operatic performances.

On the opera front, audiences will get a chance to experience Sarah Angliss’ “Giant,” which tells the story of Charles Byrne, “a man whose corpse was stolen to order and put on public display.” The work will star Karim Sulayman as Charles Byrne, Gweneth Ann Rand as Rooker, Jonathan Gunthorpe as John Hunter, Héloïse Werner as Madame DuVal, Melanie Pappenheim as Sister Maryand, and Steven Beard as Howison.

The Kreutzer Quartet will join forces with sopranos Melanie Pappenheim and Gweneth Ann Rand for music by Eleanor Alberga, Sadie Harrison, Rainier, Haydn, and Sarah Angliss.

The Aldeburgh Voices will present a festival service alongside conductor Dominic Ellis-Peckham.

EXAUDI will perform music by Finnissy, Marenzio, Monteverdi, Elisabeth Lutyens, Gibbons, and Cassandra Miller.

Roderick Williams will deliver a masterclass featuring Britten Pears Young Artists.

Dame Ann Murray will deliver a masterclass featuring Britten Pears Young Artists.

Performance Dates: June 13, 2023

 Roderick Williams, Nardus Williams, and pianist Allyson Devenish will present “A Line in the Sand,” a concert featuring music by Schubert, Strauss, Britten, Nadia Boulanger, and Errollyn Wallen, among others.

The company will present a “Britten Song Trail,” during which artists will present a series of vocal recitals all over town. There will be a sum total of different programs.

The King’s Singers will present “(GL)ORIANA,” a program centered on music by Weelkes, Cavendish, Morley, Byrd, Britten, and Tallis.

Baritone Evan Hughes will headline a program with the Knussen Chamber Orchestra under Ryan Wigglesworth. Audiences will hear music by Carter and Mozart.

The King’s Singers will present “Wonderland,” a program showcasing music by Strauss, Ligeti, Martland, Ravel, and Judith Bingham, among others.

Ian Bostridge joins forces with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for Britten’s “Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings.” The program, which will be conducted by Kazuki Yamada, will also include music by Holst and Elgar.

Soprano Juliet Fraser performs alongside the Bozzini Quartet in a program featuring music by Cassandra Miller, Beethoven, and Bach.

Baritone Roderick Williams and the Sinfonia of London under John Wilson will perform music by Sally Beamish. The program also features music by Dukas, Respighi, and Rachmaninoff.

Roderick Williams will headline “Concerteenies” alongside pianist Andrew West. The showcase will focus on presenting music to a younger audience between the ages of 0-5 years old.

Soprano Juliet Fraser presents new music for voice and electronics by Newton Armstrong and Rebeca Saunders. Also on the program is a collaborative work devised by Fraser and Cassandra Miller.

Roderick Williams joins the Knussen Chamber Orchestra and conductor Ryan Wigglesworth for a program featuring music by Haydn, Ligeti, Brahms, and Wigglesworth.

There will be a song recital in honor of Peter Pears’ birthday.

The Marian Consort will showcase a concert featuring music by des Prez, Electra Perivolaris, Lusitano, Harvey, and Roderick Williams.

Roderick Williams will headline the world premiere of his arrangement of Schubert’s “Die Schöne Müllerin” for baritone and string quartet. He will be joined by the Carducci Quartet.
