Aldeburgh Festival Set To Revive ‘The Hunting Gun’

By David Salazar

The Aldeburgh Festival is set to showcase Thomas Larcher’s “The Hunting Gun” this June.

The production, which will take place on June 7 thought 9 at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall, will feature a cast that includes Samuel Boden, Peter Schöne, Sarah Aristidou, Giulia Peri, and Olivia Vermuelen. This will be a special set of performances for Schöne, who will be making his UK debut in the run.

The work, which is Larcher’s first opera (with libretto by Friederike Gösweiner), will be conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth and directed by Karl Markovics. It is based on the famed novella by Yasushi Inoue.

“When I read the story of ‘The Hunting Gun’ for the first time, I was immediately captured by its timelessness,” Larcher noted about his inspiration in the story. “It addresses questions encountered and recognized by absolutely everyone involved in relationships with other individuals, myself included, such as whether to stay or leave, speak out or stay silent, hold on or let go.”

The opera was originally commissioned and produced by the Bregenzer Festspiele, Austria.
