By Francisco Salazar

Aigul Akhmetshina has been forced to cancel her first performance of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Opéra de Paris on June 28, 2025.

The mezzo took to social media and said, “Dear friends, I’m really sad to announce that I won’t be able to sing the first night of ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’ at the Opera Bastille this Saturday – as I’m still waiting for my visa…Thank you so much to the theatre for all their support and understanding during this stressful time. And a big thank you to the amazing Isabel Leonard for stepping in! I’m sending lots of love and good luck to my wonderful colleagues – I know it will be a beautiful performance. Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to sing the second show. I really hope to join you very soon. Thank you all for your love and support!”

Leonard, who has performed the role to great acclaim at the Metropolitan Opera and opened the Paris revival, will star alongside Mattia Olivieri, Levy Sekgapane, Carlo Lepore, and Luca Pisaroni. Diego Matheuz conducts.

Akhmetshina is still scheduled to perform from July 2 to July 13, 2025.
