Aida Garifullina Out of Met Opera’s ‘Werther’

By David Salazar

Aida Garifullina will no longer be performing in the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019-20 production of “Werther.”

Despite being originally announced to perform the role of Sophie when the Met Opera’s season was announced, the official website no longer lists her among the cast members for the Massenet opera, which will be conducted by the Met Opera’s music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. This was Garifullina’s only scheduled role for the 2019-20 season. She recently stepped out of a production of “Rigoletto” at the Vienna State Opera.

Instead, Ying Fang will be performing the opera on March 16, 20 with Erin Morley set to take over the final performances of the run.

Fang is coming off a series of performances as Servilia in Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito.” Meanwhile Morley has had a solid 2018-19 season that has seen her take on the role of Pamina in “The Magic Flute” and the Woodbird in “Siegfried.” She is also set to take on the role of Constance in “Dialogues des Carmélites.”

“Werther” is one of the more hotly anticipated productions of the Met’s 2019-20 season as it will star Pior Beczala in the title role and Joyce DiDonato as his beloved Charlotte. Etienne Dupuis will play Albert, rotating the role with Joshua Hopkins. Alan Opie will be the Bailiff.
