Welcome back for the CD and DVD releases from around the opera world.

This week one of the rising soprano releases a new album while audiences get to hear two legendary recordings of important Janáček works. Here is a look at the new releases of the week.

Rondos for Adriana

Audax releases Adriana Gonzalez‘s latest album with conductor Iñaki Encina Oyón and the acclaimed Ensemble Diderot. In the new album the soprano explores Mozart’s roles from Countess Almaviva and Fiordiligi. The album also explores music by Vincent Martín I Soler, Ferdinando Gasparo Bertoni, and Giordani. G, among others.

HORIZON: MADOG

Navona records releases the trilingual chamber opera Horizon: Madog, which tells an epic tale of post-apocalyptic environmentalism. Featuring a libretto written by Angela J. Murphy and music by Paul Frehner, the new recording star baritone Jeremy Huw Williams and Ensemble Paramirabo.

All the Way Through Evening

Navona Records releases the new album baritone Robbie Milner and pianist Ben Eames which features music by Chris DeBlasio, a composer whose life was cut short by AIDS.

The album features DeBlasio’s song cycles “All the Way Through Evening” and “In Endless Assent.” Additional works include selections from the AIDS Quilt Songbook and Ricky Ian Gordon’s “A Horse With Wings.”

SYMPHONIES NOS. 1 & 2

SYMPHONIES NOS. 1 & 2 presents two award-winning, large-scale orchestral works of London-based composer Marc Harris, written in collaboration with Jo Reeves between 2020 and 2024. Symphony No. 1, Shifting Sands, was conceived during the pandemic and traces a musical journey across continents, from Arabian deserts to the Serengeti, Asia, and the rainforests of the Americas. Symphony No. 2, Aurora Nova, blends film-score and Romantic symphonic styles, with dense, luscious orchestration. This work features organ, harp, and SATB choir singing in Latin. Both symphonies have been performed multiple times with full symphony and orchestra, each time being met with critical acclaim

Leoš Janáček: The Makropulos Affair

SOMM Recording releases an English language performance of Janáček’s masterpiece. This recording features the release of a remastered broadcast, from 1964, of Mackerras’s first London production of the opera “The Makropulos Affair.” The cast includes Marie Collier, Gregory Dempsey, Raimund Herincx, and Eric Shilling and the Chorus and Orchestra of Sadler’s Wells Opera.

The set also includes Charles Mackerras conducting “The Diary of One who Disappeared” featuring Richard Lewis and Maureen Forrester.

 Ambroise Thomas: Psyché

Palazzetto Bru Zane releases Thomas’ rarely performed work with a cast that includes Hélène Guilmette, Antoinette Dennefeld, Tassis Christoyannis, Mercedes Arcuri, Anna Dowsley, Artavazd Sargsyan, Philippe Estèphe, and Christian Helmer. The recording includes the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and Hungarian National Choir under György Vashegyi.
