Academy of Vocal Arts Announces the Return of the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition

By Chris Ruel

Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts has announced the return of the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition to the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater on Oct. 15, 2021.

AVA Master Vocal Coach Danielle Orlando will accompany the soloists. Orlando has been involved in the competition for 20 years and has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee,” “Live by Request” on A&E and the “Rosie O’Donnell Show” accompanying celebrities Luciano Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, and Michael Bolton. She also appears in the Metropolitan Opera documentary “The Audition.”

For 40 years, the competition has showcased up-and-coming talent, helping to launch the careers of opera stars Stephen Costello, Angela Meade, Michael Fabiano, and Ailyn Pérez. AVA bills the competition as an operatic American Idol, with audience members voting for their favorite award-winning Resident Artists as they compete for prizes.

The Kimmel Center, like other venues, will require audience members to provide proof of vaccination as of Sept. 18, 2021.
