Academy of Vocal Arts Announces 2023-24 Resident Artists

The Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) has announced the addition of six new singers to its Resident Artists roster.

The newly appointed Resident Artists include tenor Joshua Berg, soprano Manli Deng, mezzo-soprano Ariana Maubach, soprano Veronica Richer, baritone Geoffrey Schmelzer, and bass-baritone Nan Wang.

“We are thrilled to welcome these extraordinary artists to the Academy of Vocal Arts. They represent the future of opera and embody the passion, dedication, and artistry that we strive to foster at our institution. We are confident that their presence will enrich our community and captivate audiences with their exceptional talents,” said Scott Guzielek, President and Artistic Director of AVA, per an official press statement issued by AVA.

Berg is a recent graduate of Rice University where he studied vocal performance at the Shepherd School of Music. He was also a studio artist at The Aspen Music Festival and School and is a former vocal fellow of the Music Academy of the West.

Deng has received numerous accolades, including first place in the Sylvia Green Voice Competition. She was also a finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2019 and 2020.

Maubach has worked with such companies as Des Moines Metro Opera, the Spoleto Festival, and the Music Academy of the West.

Richer has performed with the Bay View Music Festival and is a graduate of the Mannes School of Music and Boston Conservatory.

Schmelzer has collaborated with Central City Opera, Northwestern Opera Theater, and Finger Lakes Opera, among others.

Finally, Nan Wang, a graduate of Manhattan School of Music and the Central Conservatory of Music in China, has collaborated with Glimmerglass Festival and the Chautauqua Institute, among others.
