ABAO Bilbao Opera to Present ‘Roméo et Juliette’

The ABAO Bilbao Opera will open its 72nd season with Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette.”

The opera, which will open on Oct. 21 and will run through Oct. 30, will star Javier Camarena and Nadine Sierra in the title roles. Camarena will sing his first Roméo, while Sierra will reprise the interpretation for which she received acclaim at the San Francisco Opera; she is also set to perform the opera at the Metropolitan Opera later this season.

The duo will be joined by Anna Alàs i Jové, Andrzej Filończyk, Marko Mimica, Alejandro del Cerro, Itxaro Mentxaka, Gerardo López, Isaac Galán, José Manuel Díaz, Fernando Latorre, and Juan Laborería.  Lorenzo Passerini conducts the production by Giorgia Guerra.

“Roméo et Juliette” will be performed for the fourth time at teh Bilbaro Opera after it premiered in 1983 with Alfredo Kraus and Valerie Masterson. It was last seen in 2011 with José Bros and Patrizia Ciofi.
