
Vancouver Opera to Present ‘Madama Butterfly’
By Francisco SalazarThe Vancouver Opera is set to close its 2024-25 season with Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly.”
The company is set to star sopranos Yasko Sato and Karen Chia-Ling Ho in the title role and Robert Watson and Adam Luther as Pinkerton.
They will be joined by Japanese mezzo-soprano Nozomi Kato as Suzuki, Canadian baritone Brett Polegato as Sharpless, Korean-American tenor Julius Ahn as Goro, Korean bass Insung Sim as The Bonze, Canadian baritone Luka Kawabata as Prince Yamadori, and Canadian soprano Heidi Duncan as Kate Pinkerton.
Leading the Vancouver Opera Orchestra is VO Music Director Jacques Lacombe while Mo Zhou, who is making her Vancouver Opera debut, will direct.
In a statement, Tom Wright, General Director of Vancouver Opera said, “We’re honored to close our 2024–2025 season with a production that captures the passion and tragedy at the heart of Madama Butterfly. This opera has captivated audiences for generations, and under the direction of Mo Zhou, it will be a powerful experience. Our exceptional cast, featuring international talent from Japan, Korea, Canada, and beyond, brings a depth of authenticity and artistry that makes this production truly special.”
“Madama Butterfly” will be presented five times between April 26 and May 4, 2025.
