American Opera Projects & Bare Opera to Present ‘One Drop’

By Afton Wooten

American Opera Projects and Bare Opera join forces to present Thomas Cabaniss’ “One Drop.”

The new opera is adapted from the play “Brass Ankle” by DuBose Heyward. “One Drop” follows Ruth and Larry Leamer as they await the birth of their second child.

The story is set in the 1930s rural South Carolina, where segregationist Larry is part of a group of white men who seek to exclude those with “one drop of mixed race blood” from their local school. Inna Dukach, Daniel McGrew, Skylar Ng, David Freides, Joe Beutel, Daniel Klein, Pedro Sequera, David Adam Moore, and Philip Stoddard make up the cast. David Herskovits directs and David Rosenmeyer conducts.

American Opera Projects will be holding a workshop for “One Drop” Oct. 28 through Nov. 2, with a public presentation on the final day.
