Bayreuth Festival Announces Cast Change for ‘Der Fliegende Holländer’

The Bayreuth Festival has announced a cast change for its production of “Der Fliegende Holländer.”

The company said, star baritone Michael Volle will return to the 2023 Bayreuth Festival in the title role of “Der Fliegende Holländer” and that  John Lundgren has canceled his participation for personal reasons.

“Prof. Wagner expresses her extraordinary gratitude to Michael Volle, who was last seen in Bayreuth as the acclaimed Hans Sachs in ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,'” said the official statement.

Volle is well-known for his interpretation of the opera as he has performed it at the Metropolitan Opera and Wiener Staatsoper, among others. He made his debut in Bayreuth in 2007 and has appeared in eight seasons with the festival.

He is set to join a cast that includes Georg Zeppenfeld, Elisabeth Teige, and Andreas Schager. Oksana Lyniv conducts.
