The Metropolitan Opera is set to celebrate the holiday season with its family-friendly version of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” for nine performances.

The opera, which opened on Dec. 10, 2021, is set to run until Jan. 5, 2022. The English-language adaptation of the classic fairy tale, performed in a 115-minute abridged version is directed by Julie Taymor.

The production will mark the return of Rolando Villazón to the Metropolitan Opera after an eight-year absence. The tenor makes his Met role debut as Papageno and is joined by Matthew Polenzani as Tamino and Hera Hyesang Park in her Met role debut as Pamina. Kathryn Lewek sings her iconic Queen of the Night, with Morris Robinson as Sarastro, Patrick Carfizzi as the Speaker, and Rodell Rosel as Monostatos.

For the Jan. 1, 2022, performance, Eric Ferring makes his Met role debut as Tamino and Will Liverman sings Papageno. Peixin Chen sings the role of Sarastro for both the Jan. 1 and 5, 2022, performances.

Jane Glover conducts Mozart’s masterpiece.

“The Magic Flute” performance on Dec. 18, 2021 will be broadcast live on Met Opera Radio on SiriusXM Channel 355 and the Dec. 18, 2021, performance will also be broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.
