Obituary: Former Glimmerglass Boss Paul Kellogg Passes at 84
By Nicolas QuirogaPaul Kellogg, former general and artistic director of the New York Opera and Glimmerglass Opera, passed away on April 28, 2021 at age 84, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Kellogg seemed destined for the arts from the start as his parents were also linked to art: his father worked at 20th Century Fox while his mother was a notable pianist.
When his family moved to Texas in the 1940s, Kellogg started studying literature at the University of Texas in Austin before going on to study at the Sorbonne and Columbia University.
In 1976 he joined Glimmerglass where he worked and was appointed CEO in 1979. During his tenure, Kellogg expanded the Glimmerglass Opera significantly with the presentation of well-known and lesser-known operas alike. Kellogg was also instrumental in the creation of the company’s Young American Artists program, which has served as a training opportunity for opera singers.
In addition to having worked at the New York City Opera and Glimmerglass, Kellogg collaborated with such organizations as Opera America, The Clark Foundation, Shen Wei Dance Arts, and the New York State Historical Association. He also worked with the National Endowment For The Arts and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, among others.
