Opera Parallèle Announces ‘Everest’ Graphic Novel Opera Film

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Parallèle has announced that it will present Joby Talbot and Gene Scheer’s opera “Everest” in a graphic novel opera film.

The concept will showcase the singers integrated into an animated environment creating a one-of-a-kind operatic experience. The world premiere of this film is set for summer 2021, and will be available for on-demand streaming for home viewing.

The upcoming film was conceived by Opera Parallèle’s Creative Director Brian Staufenbiel, in collaboration with illustrator Mark Simmons and cinematographer David Murakami.

The creative process will begin with the studio recording of the singers, followed by an emotion capture process which forms the basis of the animated characters. The singers’ own movements control the animated expressions of their characters.

For the musical recording Opera Parallèle’s General and Artistic Director Nicole Paiement conducts a cast that includes Sasha Cooke, Nathan Granner, Kevin Burdette, Hadleigh Adams, Matt Boehler, Charlotte Fanvu, Shawnette Sulker, Whitney Steele, and Kevin Gino.
