Jonas Kaufmann, Patricia Petibon & Sonya Yoncheva Lead Théâtre des Champs-Elysées’ 2020-21 Season

The Théâtre des Champs-Elysées has announced its 2020-21 season featuring a vast array of programs and stars.

Here are opera and vocal performance highlights of the season:

Operas

Handel’s Messiah is set to be directed by Robert Wilson with Marc Minkowski conducting. The cast includes Elena Tsallagova, Helena Rasker, Richard Croft, José Coca Loza, and Alexis Fousekis with Les Musiciens du Louvre.

Performance Dates: Sept. 16-19, 2020

“Le Ballet royal de la Nuit” is set to feature music by Cambefort, Boësset, Constantin, Lambert, Cavalli, and Rossi with direction by Francesca Lattiada. Sébastien Daucé conducts a cast that includes Lucile Richardot, Violaine Le Chenadec, Caroline Weynants, Ilektra Platiopoulou, Caroline Dangin-Bardot, Perrine Devillers, Deborah Cachet, David Tricou, Davy Cornillot, Etienne Bazola, Renaud Bres, and Nicolas Brooymans.

Performance Dates: Oct. 7 & 8, 2020

Strauss’ “Salome” is set to be conducted by Henrik Nánási and directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Patricia Petibon stars in the title role alongside Gábor Bretz, Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke, and Sophie Koch.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14-24, 2020

Manuel Renga directs a new production of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” with Marc Leroy-Calatayud conducting. Dima Bawab, Norma Nahoun, Matthieu Justine, Sahy Ratia, Jean-Christophe Lanièce, Thibault de Damas, Sara Gouzy, and Natalie Pérez star.

Performance Dates: Feb. 1-13, 2021

Jérémie Rhorer conducts Poulenc’s “La Voix Humaine” and Thierry Escaich’s “Point d’orgue creation’s” with Patricia Petibon, Jean-Sébastien Bou, and Cyrille Dubois. Olivier Py directs the new production.

Performance Dates: March 6-14, 2021

Rolando Villazón directs a new production of Bellini’s “La Sonnambula” with Nadine Sierra, Alexander Tsymbalyuk, Francesco Demuro, and Annunziata Vestri. Riccardo Frizza conducts.

Opera in Concert 

Handel’s “Oreste” stars Franco Fagioli in the title role, Francesca Aspromonte, Julia Lezhneva, Kristian Adams, Renato Dolcini, and Francesca Ascioti. Maxim Emelyanychev conducts Il Pomo d’Oro.

Performance Date: Nov. 13, 2020

Monteverdi’s “Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda” is set to star Magdalena Kožená with La Cetra-Barockorchester Basel and conductor Andrea Marcon.

Performance Date: Nov. 20, 2020

Massenet’s “Werther” is set to be presented with Sir Simon Keenlyside in the title role, alongside Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Jean-Sébastien Bou, Florie Valiquette, and Marc Barrard. Daniele Rustioni conducts the Orchestre et Maîtrise de l’Opéra national de Lyon.

Performance Date: Nov. 23, 2020

Haydn’s “Die Jahreszeiten” will be led by Emmanuelle Haïm with Orchestre et Chœur du Concert d’Astrée. Camilla Tilling, Robin Tritschler, and Mikhail Timoshenko star. 

Performance Date: Dec. 7, 2020

Vivaldi’s “L’Olimpiade” stars Riccardo Novaro, Ambroisine Bré, Benedetta Mazzucato, Chiara Skerath, Carlo Vistoli, Ana Maria Labin, and Luigi Di Donato. Jean-Christophe Spinosi conducts the Ensemble Matheus.

Performance Date: Dec. 9, 2020

Beethoven’s Missa solemnis will be performed by Genia Kühmeier, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Steve Davislim, and Matthias Goerne with the Orchestre National de France and conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

Performance Dates: Dec. 18 & 19, 2020

Charpentier’s Te Deum will be conducted by Sébastien Daucé. Soloists include Caroline Weynants, Caroline Dangin-Bardot, Perrine Devillers, Marie Pouchelon, David Tricou, Léo Vermot-Desroches, Antonin Rondepierre, Randol Rodriguez, Ryan Veillet, Etienne Bazola, René Ramos Premier, Nicolas Brooymans, and Renaud Bres. The Ensemble Correspondances accompanies.

Performance Date: Jan. 9, 2021

Julia Kleiter, Emőke Baráth, Sandrine Piau, Michael Spyres, and Vittorio Prato lead Mozart’s “Così fan tutte.” Giovanni Antonini leads the Kammerorchester Basel and Basler Madrigalisten.

Performance Date: Jan. 27, 2021

Katharina Konradi and Matthias Goerne perform Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with Thomas Hengelbrock conducting the Balthasar-Neumann-Ensemble and chor.

Performance Date: Feb. 8, 2021

Verdi’s “Un Ballo in maschera” stars Mary Elizabeth Williams, Bongiwe Nakani, Harriet Eyley, Matteo Lippi, and Simone Piazzola. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla leads the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and chorus.

Performance Date: March 16, 2021

Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is set to be performed by Emőke Baráth and Carlo Vistoli with Le Concert d’Astrée and Emmanuelle Haïm.

Performance Date: March 17, 2021

Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion is set to be performed Mary Bevan, Paul Murrihy, Mark Padmore, Samuel Hasselhorn, and Matthew Brook with the Orchestra and chorus of the Age of Enlightenment with Mark Padmore conducting.

Performance Date: March 18, 2021

Véronique Gens stars in Desmarest’s “Didon” with Reinoud van Mechelen, Thomas Dolié, Marie Perbost, Judith Van Wanrooij, Marie Gautrot, Marine Lafdal-Franc, Nicholas Scott, and Guilhem Worms. The Orchestre et Chœur du Concert Spirituel is conducted by Hervé Niquet.

Bach’s Johannes-Passion is conducted by Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas and stars Eugénie Lefebvre, Paul Figuier, Anders J. Dahlin, Paco Garcia, Nicolas Brooymans, and Etienne Bazola.

Nina Quilichini, Josè Maria Lo Monaco, Philippe Talbot, and Christian Senn perform Mozart’s Krönungsmesse with the Ensemble Matheus and conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi.

Brandon Jovanovich, Anja Kampe, Günther Groissböck, Derek Welton, and Sir Simon Keenlyside star in Wagner’s “Parsifal” with the Bayerisches Staatsorchester and conductor Franz Welser-Möst.

Jessica Pratt, Xaber Anduaga, Gabriele Viviani, and Krzysztof Bączyk, star in Bellini’s “I Puritani” with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and Giacomo Sagripanti conducting.

Strauss’ “Capriccio” stars Krassimira Stoyanova, Christoph Pohl, Daniel Behle, Nikolay Borchev, Georg Zeppenfeld, and Christa Mayer. The Staatskapelle Dresden is conducted by Christian Thielemann.

Florie Valiquette, Chantal Santon-Jeffery, Eléonore Pancrazi, Sahy Ratia, and Thomas Dolié sing Mozart’s Requiem with Le Concert de la Loge and conductor Julien Chauvin.

Lecocq’s “La Fille de Madame Angot” will star Anne-Catherine Gillet, Véronique Gens, Mathias Vidal, Yann Beuron, Matthieu Lécroart, Ingrid Perruche, Antoine Philippot, Flannan Obé, and David Witczak. Sébastien Rouland conducts the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and Chœur de la Radio Flamande.

Performance Date: June 30, 2021 

Offenbach’s “La Belle Hélène” stars Michèle Losier, Pauline Texier, Camille Poul, Marie Lenormand, Cyrille Dubois, Marc Barrard, Eric Huchet, Philippe Ermelier, Aliénor Feix, Raphaël Brémard, Sahy Ratia, and Samuel Namotte. Alexandre Bloch conducts the Orchestre National de Lille and Chœur Septentrion.
