Catalina Cuervo, Alexandra LoBianco Headline Portland Opera’s 2020-21 Season

The Portland Opera has announced its 2020-21 season, which includes five operas and major concert event.

“We are thrilled to announce the lineup of our 2020/21 season and the triumphant return of opera to Portland’s beautiful rainy months,” General Director Sue Dixon stated in a press release. “This past year has been one of reflection and listening. As a result, our 2020/21 season is crafted based on audience feedback: we’re going big and intimate, telling stories that reflect our community, and collaborating with organizations around the region. We couldn’t be more excited to share this season with everyone.”

The new season kicks off with Andreas Mitisek’s production of “Frida,” a work written by Robert Xavier Rodriguez and Hilary Blecher. Catalina Cuervo takes on her signature role alongside Bernardo Bermudez as Diego.

Performance Dates: Sept. 11-Oct. 3, 2020

Alexandra LoBianco takes on the lead role in “Tosca” alongside Angelo Villari as Cavaradossi and Gordon Hawkins as Scarpia. Antonello Allemando conducts the Puccini opera written by Giacosa and Illica. Linda Brovsky directs.

Performance Dates: Oct. 30-Nov. 7, 2020

The company will present a double bill of Frid’s “The Diary of Anne Frank” alongside Heggie and Scheer’s “For a Look or a Touch.” The former will star Jennifer Zetlan as Anne Frank while the latter opera will be led by Allen Nause. Tara Faircloth directs while Nicholas Fox conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 22-Feb. 6, 2021

The company will present its Big Night, A Special Concert with conductor George Manahan and Sue Dixon and Daniel Biaggi as hosts.

Performance Date: March 13, 2021 

Finally, the season ends with Verdi and Cammarano’s “Il Trovatore” starring Selene Zanetti, Hovhannes Ayvazyan, Wei Wu, Weston Hurt, and Daryl Freedman. Manahan conducts while Fenlon Lamb directs.

Performance Date: May 7-15, 2021
