San Diego Opera to Present New Puppet-Laden Production of ‘Hansel and Gretel’

The San Diego Opera is set to resume its 2019-20 season with a new production of Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel.”

The famed opera, which will open on Feb. 8, 2020 at the San Diego Civic Tehatre, will feature Blythe Gaissert as Hansel, with soprano Sara Gartland as Gretel. Other cast members include Malcolm MacKenzie as the Father with tenor Joel Sorensen as the witch. Marcy Stonikas will be the mother while Devon Guthrie will appear as the Dew Fairy / Sandman.

The opera will be conducted by Ari Pelto in his company debut while Brenna Conner will stage the production, which will debut in San Diego after appearing at the Vancouver Opera. The presentation of the opera features life-sized puppets in the style of Japanese bunraku puppetry as designed by Old Trout Puppet Workshop.

The opera will run through Feb. 16, 2020 for a total of four performances.
