Delaware Valley Opera To Kick Off 33rd Season With Opera Gala

By Nicole Kuchta

Sullivan County’s Delaware Valley Opera, in the hands of new General Manager Ken Parks and Artistic Director Carol Castel, will kick off its 33rd season with an Opera Gala!

The Opera Gala will feature “a tasty buffet that will appeal to your appetite, along with a taste of the season’s upcoming productions. The evening of food and music will showcase the incredible talent DVO has to offer.”

DVO’s 2019 season will feature two productions, the first a double bill of two short operas by Gian Carlo Menotti – “The Telephone” and “The Medium.” Soprano Brooke Schooley and mezzo-soprano Janice Meyerson will be featured. Performances will be held at the Tusten Theatre, a town-owned former movie house in Narrowsburg, NY, from July 27 to  August 4, 2019. Additionally, for those interested in learning more about the opera, “An Introduction to Gian Carlo Menotti’s ‘The Medium,'” led by DVO chorus member and retired Literature Professor Ray Scheindlin, will be held on Jun. 18, 2019 at the Tusten-Cochecton Library. Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera “H.M.S. Pinafore” will follow, with performances running from August 17 to 25, 2019.

The company aims to “provide opportunities for area talent to study and perform a wide range of opera repertoire; to introduce opera to young people and the general public through performances, workshops and educational programs; and to foster collaborations between creative and interpretive artists and technicians,” according to their website.

The Opera Gala will be held at the Delaware Youth Center in Callicoon, NY on Jun. 22, 2019.
