As we get deeper into June, some companies are starting to ramp up their summer programming while others take it easier and easier. This weekend’s offerings place a premium on the baroque repertory, one new work, and one timeless classic.

Serse – In the Series

Handel’s opera will get a production in Washington D.C. at the Atlas Performing Arts Center this weekend with two performances on Saturday and Sunday. The work will be performed using period instruments under the musical direction of timothy Nelson.

La Traviata – Los Angeles Opera

Verdi’s middle period masterpiece continues its run of performances in a production that stars Adela Zaharia and Rame Lahaj in the lead roles of Violetta and Alfredo. Vitaliy Bliyy rounds out the cast which is conducted by Conlon. Zaharia is one of the rising stars of the opera world and any opportunity to check her out is must-watch opera. The company will perform the work on Sunday.

The Coronation of Poppea – Opera Theatre of Saint Louis

Monteverdi’s masterpiece opens on Sunday. The famed opera will feature Emily Fons in the title role with Sarah Mesko as Ottavia and Brenton Ryan as Nerone. The opera will be directed by Tim Albery with Nicholas Kok conducting.

Orlando – San Francisco Opera

On Sunday, the San Francisco Opera will open a production of “Orlando” featuring Sasha Cooke in the title role. The cast also includes Heidi Stober, Cristina Gansch, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, and Christian Van Horn, all under the musical direction of Christopher Moulds. Harry Fehr directs.

Some Light Emerges – Utopia Opera

The latest work by Laura Kaminsky, Mark Campbell, and Kimberly Reed takes the stage at the Ida K. Lang Concert Hall for its New York Premiere. Audiences will get a chance to check out the work between June 7-9.
