This week, we see a number of standard pieces being performed in new productions as well as some rarely performed contemporary works. We also leave the opera genre to showcase a major Zarzuela being performed in Spain. Here is a look.
Satyagraha – Vlaanderen Opera, Belgium
Rihab Chaieb and Peter Tantsits headline Philip Glass’ masterwork in a new production by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Koen Kessels conducts the co-production which is set to be performed at Theater Basel and Komische Oper Berlin in coming season. Tineke Van Ingelgem, Raehann Bryce-Davis, Denzil Delaere, and Justin Hopkins also star.
Simon Boccanegra – Opéra de Paris, France
Ludovic Tézier headlines a new production of Verdi’s great work. He is joined Maria Agresta, Francesco Demuro, and Mika Kares with Fabio Luisi conducting and Calixto Bieto directing the new production.
Tosca – Ópera de Oviedo, Spain
Arturo Chacón-Cruz sings his first Cavaradossi alongside Ekaterina Metlova in the title role. Ángel Ódena rounds out the cast as the villainous Scarpia with Pablo González conducting and Arnaud Bernard directing the production.
La Casa de las Bernardas – Teatro de la Zarzuela, Spain
Nancy Fabiola Herrera headlines the Zarzeula with Carmen Romeu, Luis Cansino, Carol Garcia, Belen Elvira and Berna Perles. Miquel Ortega conducts the acclaimed production by Bárbara Lluch.
War and Peace – Welsh National Opera, United Kingdom
Prokofiev opens the Welsh Autumn season with a cast of young talent including Lauren Michelle as Natasha and Jonathan McGovern as Andrei. Tomas Hanus conducts the production by David Pountney.
