The Happenstancers to Present ‘The King’s Grief’

By David Salazar

Toronto’s The Happenstancers will present “The King’s Grief” this November.

The expanded concert length version of Judith Weir’s micro opera “King Harald’s Saga” will take the stage of Redeemer Lutheran Church on Nov. 6 and 7 with both showcases commencing at 7:30 p.m. local time.

The production extends Weir’s work into a multi-act structure, with a solo soprano, Reilly Nelson, portraying five characters across three acts. Works by Thomas Adès, Oliver Knussen, Thierry Tidrow, Mary Dering, John Dowland and others serve as incidental music.

Tidrow’s contribution consists of three new songs commissioned by The Happenstancers for the program.

Nelson is joined by violinist Julia Mirzoev, cellist Peter Eom, trumpeter Declan Scott and pianist Joonghun Cho. Brad Cherwin serves as clarinetist and artistic director. Billy Wong is the lighting designer, and Hoi Tong Keung is production and operations manager.

“We love to work in this way, exploring new music, imagining new shapes, and seeing how far we can push the format. To attach chamber music to a narrative — in this case the failed invasion of England by King Harald Hardrada of Norway in 1066 — and place ourselves into some sort of operatic frame, it gives us a chance to push our theatricality to a farther place. The project challenges us, excites us, to make nearly tangible some of the explosive emotional forces held within the music,” Cherwin said, per an official press release.
