State Opera South Australia will close its Golden Jubilee mainstage season with a new production of Bizet’s “Carmen,” this October at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide.

Directed by Australian director Laura Hansford and conducted by Artistic Director Dane Lam, the production stars South Australian soprano Charlotte Kelso in the title role, alongside tenor Gerard Schneider as Don José, baritone Samuel Dale Johnson as Escamillo, and soprano Desiree Frahn as Micaëla, with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and State Opera Chorus. The cast also includes Cathy-Di Zhang as Frasquita, Fiona McArdle as Mercedes, John Longmuir as Remendado, Nicholas Lester as Dancaire and Morales, and Andrew Williams as Zuniga. Ailsa Paterson designed the production, with Anthony Hunt serving as chorus master.

“Carmen fits perfectly with our thesis that opera is for everyone: it’s elite, not elitist, with our singers the Olympians of the vocal world,” said Lam, per an official press release.

The production runs from Oct. 17 through Oct. 24.
