The Royal Swedish Opera will present a farewell concert on its main stage on Nov. 29, 2026, marking the close of the Opera House ahead of a five-year renovation that will see performances relocate to the Gasometer.

Two performances are scheduled, with one at 4 p.m. local time and the second at 7 p.m. local time.

The program brings together the Royal Swedish Orchestra, marking its 500th anniversary in 2026, the Royal Swedish Opera Chorus, and such vocal soloists as Julia Sporsén, Johanna Rudström, Jeremy Carpenter and Daniel Johansson. Conductor Alan Gilbert leads the programs, which feature works by Mozart, Dvořák, Puccini, and Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad.

As a gesture for the occasion, the concert will conclude with the finale of Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 in F minor, known as “The Farewell Symphony,” in which the orchestra’s musicians leave the stage one by one until only a few remain.

The renovation plan includes an extension of approximately 2,300 square meters, allowing all artistic activities to stay under the same roof, as well as three new functional ballet rehearsal rooms, improved acoustics in the auditorium, and increased accessibility. In addition, there will be a new entrance to an audience foyer and second stage which will mainly be used for its performances geared towards young people, along with a new terrace for the audience will be built on top of Café  Opera with a view of Kungsträdgården, one of Stockholm’s most popular areas.
