Music Theatre Wales to Present Street Art Opera Program at Newport Live Act Fringe Festival
By David SalazarMusic Theatre Wales (MTW) is set to bring its Street Art Opera program to the Newport Live Act Fringe Festival on Saturday, March 21, at The Place, Bridge Street, Newport.
The event is presented in partnership with Newport-based community music charity Operasonic. MTW’s Street Art Operas project bold animation, music, and striking visuals onto external urban walls after dark, with audiences listening through silent disco headphones. Each work runs approximately ten minutes and is free to attend.
Among the works are “Out of Time,” created by Claire Victoria Roberts, Giselle Ty, and Lauren Orme with music performed by Sinfonia Cymru. The work won Best Welsh Performance Film at Focus Wales 2025.
“Rahmat-Mercy-Trugaredd,” created by Amelia Unity, Eadyth, Sam Hussain, and Jamie TC Panton, with vocals by Eadyth, Sam Hussain, and Richard Parry, draws on Sufism and hip-hop culture to follow a character named Sana as she pushes back against cultural and societal restraints to claim her creative identity. The work blends henna and graffiti-inspired visuals with music described as soaring and uplifting.
“People have preconceptions about how performances can be seen and heard,” said MTW Artistic Director Michael McCarthy, per an official press release. “We are delighted to be part of Newport Live Act Fringe and bringing these two works to fringe audiences to experience in such a new and exciting way.”
