Jonas Kaufmann, Malin Byström, Allan Clayton & Lidia Fridman Lead New CD/DVD Releases

Welcome back as we explore the latest CD and DVD releases from around the opera world.

This week audiences get to hear one of the most popular tenor’s new album. There is also a new album from a great Swedish soprano and a new version of Verdi’s “Macbeth.”

Dvořák: Early Songs

Navona releases Czech soprano Martina Janková and Barbara Maria Willi’s new album, which explores Dvořák songs for soprano.

Malin Byström – German Opera Scenes and Arias

Swedish soprano Malin Byström presents a journey through her German repertoire, accompanied by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under Thomas Søndergård. The recording features music by Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Carl Maria von Weber and Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

Amidst the Shades

Ruby Hughes is joined by Jonas Nordberg and Mime Yamahiro Brinkmann for an album that explores Elizabethan music including works by John Dowland, Robert Johnson, John Danyel, Purcell, and others.

Mr. Dowland’s Dream

Clara Brunet and Bor Zuljan join together for an album that combines sixteenth-century works by John Dowland and Robert Johnson with twentieth-century works by Peter Warlock, William Walton, Pink Floyd, and Thelonius Monk.

Hans Zender: Schubert’s Winterreise, A Composed Interpretation

Allan Clayton joins the Aurora Orchestra and Nicholas Collon for the late Hans Zender’s reimagining of Schubert’s “Winterreise.” Zender preserves Schubert’s vocal line but enriches the sound world with guitar, accordion, melodicas, and striking orchestral effects that evoke storms, frozen tears, and fleeting dreams.

Tranquilles Coeurs: Le Goût Français dans les Cours Allemandes

Alpha Classics releases Ensemble Théodora’s new album tracing the French style in Germanic lands in the 18th century.

Bach’s Lutheran Masses BWV 233-236

The Kölner Akademie, under the artistic direction of Michael Alexander Willens, presents “J.S. Bach: Lutheran Masses BWV 233-236,” a monumental exploration of the composer’s four “Kyrie–Gloria” Masses. The album features Hanna Herfurtner, Elvira Bill, Thomas Bonni, and Gwilym Bowen.

LISETTE

Navona Records releases “Lisette,” an album featuring songs with text in Haitian Creole.

SEMMELWEIS

American composer Raymond J. Lustig releases his next album, a recording of his new song cycle “SEMMELWEIS,” on the Sono Luminus label. With words by Matthew Doherty and music by Lustig, the recording featuring soprano Charlotte Mundy, Raymond J. Lustig, and The Rhythm Method, plus violinist Leah Asher, cellist Meaghan Burke, bass clarinetist Chrystof Knoche, and double bassist Ranjit Prasad.

Magische Töne

Jonas Kaufmann’s new Sony Classical album, “Magische Töne” (Magical Sounds), features some of operetta and opera melodies. In addition to perennial favorites by Emmerich Kálmán, Franz Lehár, and Paul Abraham, the album also includes one of the most popular arias in the tenor repertoire.

For the album, Kaufmann recorded with the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, conducted by Dirk Kaftan. Nikola Hillebrand also joins Kaufmann in the album.

Giuseppe Verdi: Macbeth

Dynamic releases the French version of Verdi’s “Macbeth” from the Festival Verdi. The cast includes Ernesto Petti, Lidia Fridman, Michele Pertusi, and Luciano Ganci. The Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma and Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini will be conducted by Roberto Abbado. Pierre Audi directs.
