Joyce DiDonato, Louise Alder, Nadine Koutcher & Nicholas Phan Lead New CD/DVD Releases
By Francisco SalazarWelcome back as we explore the latest CD and DVD releases from around the opera world.
This week, audiences are in for a world premiere recording from one of the great mezzos, a Strauss album from a rising star soprano, a contemporary album of rediscovered works, and a lot of baroque music. Here is a look at some of the most anticipated releases.
Eight Chapters for Giuseppe Verdi
Emily—No Prisoner Be
The new album, based on the poems of Emily Dickinson, is set for release on Platoon. Joyce DiDonato and the genre-defying string trio of Nicolas Kendall, Ranaan Meyer, and Charles Yang from Time for Three, perform on the piece by Kevin Puts.
“Emily—No Prisoner Be” is a theatrical song cycle that sets Emily Dickinson’s best-known poems alongside some of her lesser-known gems to music that moves from deeply intimate to absolutely electrifying virtuosity.
In a statement, DiDonato said, “Emily—No Prisoner Be is made for this moment. When Kevin first came to me with the idea of writing me something that unites Emily’s words with his music, and Time For Three’s pure and unadulterated energy, I knew immediately it would be deeply transformative. This daring project invites us to explore what it means to create simply for the act of creating; how to examine the hard questions about death and suffering, and ecstasy and hope; and how to take our small, singular existence and live it out loud.”
Puts added, “Time for Three mentioned a long-standing interest in making an album of songs, and having just worked with the great Joyce DiDonato, who lit up the Metropolitan Opera stage as Virginia Woolf in my operatic adaptation of The Hours, I felt I knew just the singer. If there is expressive breadth in this deep dive into the cosmos of Emily Dickinson, it is largely thanks to the four extraordinary performers who welcomed and facilitated it.”
