
Obituary: Austrian Soprano Monika Riedler Passes Away

Riedler studied voice at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and attended Master classes with Marianne Schech, James King, Helmut Rilling and Sergiu Celibidache.
The soprano went on to build a great reputation performing in Europe, the USA and Canada and went on to be known for opera and operetta.
She sang at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Hamburgische Staatsoper, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Neue Oper Wien and Sommeroper Klosterneuburg. She sang with the Sagra Musicale Umbra in Perugia, Sofia New Year Festival, Vienna Festival, Haydn Festival Eisenstadt, Tyrolean Festival Erl, Salzburg Delirium, Gmunden Festival, the Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano, the Symphony Orchestra Ljubljana, and the Wiener Symphoniker.
Her operatic repertoire included works by Richard Strauss, Mozart, Smetana, Offenbach, and Orff while her operetta roles such as Rosalinde in “Fledermaus,” Saffi in “Zigeunerbaron,” “Gräfin Mariza” and “La Belle Heléne.” Riedler also sang a considerable amount of concert repertoire including Mendelssohn’s Symphony Nr 2, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater and his Requiem, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
Outside of her performance schedule, the soprano built a reputation as a voice teacher. In Germany, she taught at the Munich University of Music and Theatre and taught vocal technique and repertoire as well as the methodological aspects of voice pedagogy.
In Austria, she also taught voice at the University of Music and Applied Arts in Vienna Austria and was part of the Institute Antonio Salieri for Voice Pedagogy and Vocal Sciences. She was professor of voice at the St. Poelten Conservatory of Liturgical Music.
Riedler left numerous recordings including Johann Michael Haydn’s “Chiemsee Messe,” “Das neugeborene Kindlein” and Haydn’s Creation.
