
Anthony Roth Costanzo’s ‘Glass Handel’ Takes Stage at Opéra National de Paris
By David SalazarThe Opéra National de Paris presented “Glass Handel” as the featured work of its annual Gala Lyrique at the Palais Garnier on Nov. 14, 2025, at 8 p.m.
The production was created by experiential publishers VISIONAIRE in collaboration with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and producer Cath Brittan.
First seen in the United States in 2018 through partnerships with Opera Philadelphia, the Barnes Foundation, National Sawdust, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, “Glass Handel” later headlined the 2022 BBC Proms. The work features music by Philip Glass in combination with that of George Frideric Händel in a multidisciplinary format that incorporates dance, live painting, film, fashion, and sound design.
Costanzo headlined the evening with Karen Kamensek conducting.
The performance also featured opera music videos by James Ivory & Pix Talarico; Mark Romanek & Myles Yachts; Tilda Swinton & Sandro Kopp; Jacolby Satterwhite; James Kaliardos & Marisa Tomei; Daniel Askill; Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari; Rupert Sanders; AES+F; and Mickalene Thomas.
