Munich Biennale Announces 20th Season

In 2026 the Münchener Biennale celebrates its 20th edition.

This article only includes classical vocal works being presented.

Nontobeko Bhengu, Florian Stern, and Julien Horbatuk star in  Zara Ali’s “Codeborn.” Florentine Klepper and Deva Schubert serve as stage directors. Hansjörg Sofka conducts Ensemble Phace.

Performance Dates: May 8-10, 2026


“V01CES//B0D1EZ” is a new work by Piyawat Louilarpprasert that honors Hans Werner Henze on what would have been his 100th birthday. Beatrice Maia and Henrique Lencastre perform with the Münchener Kammerorchester under the baton of Bas Wiegers. This work is based on excerpts from Henze’s vocal cycle “Voices.”

Jens Ginge Skov, Constanze Jader, and Ensemble Mosaik present “ENDLICH,” by composer Asia Ahmetjanova and director Franziska Angerer. Leonard Weiss conducts.

Performance Dates: May 10-12, 2026


Inna Fedorii, Fleuranne Broadway, and Joshua Sanders perform Monthati Masebe and Shanice Ndlovu’s “Isithunzi.”

Performance Dates: May 12-14, 2026


“Xochiyaoyotl“ by David Camargo, Amauta García, and Maximiliano Soto Mayorga features performances by Laure-Catherine Beyers and Johannes Wieners.

Performance Dates: May 13 & 14, 2026


Carmen Larios Caparrós, Olivia Johnson, Oscar Encinas, and  Jacobo Ochoa present Margareta Ferek-Petrić and Silvan Rechsteiner’s “Der Miesepups,” inspired by Kirsten Fuchs and Cindy Schmid’s book of the same name. Maria-magdalena Kwaschik is the stage director and Michael Pandya conducts.

Performance Dates: May 14-16, 2026


Peyee Chen, Sean Bell, Mathias Monrad Møller, and Halvor Festervoll Melien present Yuri Umemoto and
Gareth Mattey’s “crypt_.” Var Furre Aam is the stage director. Christian Eggen conducts the Oslo Sinfonietta.

Performance Dates: May 16-17, 2026
