Festival della Valle d’Itria to Open with ‘Tancredi’

By Francisco Salazar

The Festival della Valle d’Itria is set to inaugurate with Rossini’s “Tancredi” on July 18, 2025.

The performance will take place at the Palazzo Ducale di Martina Franca and will also be presented on July 26, 29, and August 2.

Sesto Quatrini will conduct a production by Andrea Bernard and will star Dave Monaco, Yulia Vakula, Adolfo Corrado, Francesca Pia Vitale, Hinano Yorimitsu, Marcela Vidra, and Giulia Alletto.

In a statement, Andrea Bernard said, “Tancredi is a very contemporary work. In a world riddled with real and informational conflicts, where the noise of war makes it difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood, even the private sphere is contaminated. The characters are not free to love, to choose, to understand.” The story, the director continues, “is set in a present yet suspended time, in a place that is both concrete and symbolic: a bomb-ravaged playground. A place that should never be touched by violence, and which for this very reason reveals all its absurdity. A space where the war is already over, where only the mark of destruction remains.” The challenge of staging the two endings finds its dramatic rationale in the external gaze of a child, “an uncontaminated gaze, capable of transforming tragedy into possibility, death into rebirth.”
