
Salzburg Festival Announces Conductor & Program Change for Vienna Philharmonic Concerts
By David SalazarThe Salzburg Festival has announced a major cancelation for two concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic.
Per an official press release, Esa-Pekka Salonen will replace Lorenzo Viotti for the July 27 and 28 performances. Viotti canceled his appearances due to acute illness.
In his absence, Salonen has modified the program. “Oedipus Rex” will remain on the program in the first half, as originally scheduled, but the second half will see the conductor take on Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique in lieu of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor.
“Oedipus Rex” will star Christoph Waltz as the narrator, Allan Clayton in the title role, Marina Viotti as Iocasta, Michael Volle as Creon / Messenger, Albert Dohmen as Tiresias, and Antonin Rondepierre as the Shepherd.
