8 Companies Receive $180,000 in Civic Practice Grants from OPERA America

OPERA America has announced the recipients of $180,000 in Civic Practice Grants. The awards went to eight Professional Company Members that were selected by industry leaders from a pool of 38 applications.

The grantees are Anchorage Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Cultura (San Jose, CA), Opera Parallèle (San Francisco, CA), Opera Saratoga, and White Snake Projects (Brookline, MA).

Civic practice asks opera leaders to think flexibly about the strengths and weaknesses of the art form and delve into what it means to be engaged cultural citizens in their communities. The grants help Professional Company Members learn about civic priorities in their communities, develop strong reciprocal relationships with other arts and non-arts organizations, and deliver services through authentic, mutually beneficial partnerships.

“OPERA America believes opera companies must extend beyond transactional strategies to demonstrate their commitment to strengthening the communities they serve,” president/CEO of OPERA America Marc A. Scorca, stated in the official press release. “Civic Practice Grants help companies draw on their creative assets and organizational resources to address public priorities.”
