By Nicole Kuchta

The 48th Annual George London Awards Competition for Opera Singers will host their final round and award announcements on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 at the Morgan Library & Museum’s Gilder Lehrman Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Judges for the competition include Harolyn Blackwell, John Hausner, Nora London, George Shirley, and Richard Stilwell. Accompaniment will be provided by pianist Craig Rutenberg.

The competition is one of the oldest and most prestigious vocal competitions in North America – approximately 90 singers will compete to reach the finals. Winners will be granted the George London Award, a $10,000 prize named for Canadian-American bass-baritone George London, “one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century.”

At the event, each singer will perform one piece and while the judges deliberate, the audience will enjoy a reception. Once deliberation is done, everyone will return to Gilder Lehrman Hall for the announcement of the winners.

Past winners include Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming, Christine Goerke, Matthew Polenzani, and Sondra Radvanovsky, to name just a few.
