Weekend Preview – USA (7/7-9): Glimmerglass Festival Opens With ‘Porgy and Bess’

The summer continues its torrid pace with a number of major companies showcasing production premieres.

The Glimmerglass Festival kicks off its 2017 season on Friday with “Porgy and Bess,” which stars Musa Ngqungwana. The same goes for the Pittsburgh Festival Opera, which debuts that same night with “Sweeney Todd,” which also plays on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Des Moines Metro Opera showcases the second to last performance of its run of “A Little Night Music” on Friday and Santa Fe Opera continues its run of “Lucia Di Lammermoor on the first night of the weekend as well.

Saturday night brings the debut of the Central City Opera’s production of “Carmen” as well as the first performance of Glimmerglass’ “Oklahoma!”

Also on tap are Seagle Music Colony’s “The Light in the Piazza,” which will also be featured on Sunday, Santa Fe Opera’s “Die Fledermaus,” Opera Saratoga’s “Zemire et Azor,” Pittsburgh Festival Opera’s “Hansel and Gretel,” “Frida” at Cincinnati Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera’s “Turandot.”

On Sunday, Charlottesville Opera opens its production of “Rigoletto” as well as the opening of Opera Saratoga’s production of “The Cradle We Rock.” Meanwhile, Des Moines Metro Opera continues its run of “Billy Budd.”

Finally, OperaRox Productions continues its run of “Sweets By Kate” on Sunday.
